Prize Time Again

And the winner is Melanie Goldman--again! You know the routine, send me your mom's address again along with a wish list. Since Melanie lives in Germany I can't mail her prize directly to her so her mom gets to read it first and save it for when Melanie makes her next trip to the USA.

Okay the prizes for this month's two contests will be signed copies of my own new book Shudder, which should begin showing up in bookstores this weekend. It arrived at the warehouse Tuesday afternoon. I already posted the backliner a few weeks ago. I'll award one prize for the first through fifteenth of October and the second for the last half of October. Each comment on one of my blogs during that time period will count as an entry and each follower will automatically be included in the drawing. That means the same person can be entered several times.

One of the major themes in Shudder is friendship. I feel strongly about the importance of friends, both the casual friends because we work together, are neighbors, or some such common link, but I think there's a deeper level of friendship each person, especially women need. This kind of friendship endures and as the old proverb says, "A friend loveth at all times." I've been privileged to have this kind of friends and I think most of you have too. There's the one who brought me a loaf of hot bread on my birthday, the one who continued writing to me more than forty years after we last saw each other, the one who laughed and cried with me while raising our children, the one who . . . Tell me about one of your best friends and why you love this person.

One of my best friends, Melanie, I met 9 years ago. We met at work on the very first day for both of us. We went to lunch and that was it...we were friends from that moment on. I love Mel because she is one of the most thoughtful and giving people I've ever known. In a workplace filled with irritated grumpy people, she was one of the only ones I could share happy joyful things with. Things just wouldn't be the same without her bright smiling face.

My best friend, Bailey, and I have been close friends since junior high. I love Bailey because she is the kindest person I know. She is always cheerful and never put anyone down. She is a shiny example of the perfect friend.

My book club are my best friends. And they're a great support system! Between them and my family (many of whom live nearby also) I'm loathe to even think about leaving the area. Having lived away for a year (during a really difficult pregnancy) the value of a great support system has skyrocketed in my life.

My best friend is Marlene, we met at church more than 20 years ago. We both are redheaded and love to have fun. She is always there when I need a shoulder to cry on. She is always the one there to help me move or whatever else I might need. Once she moved to Nashville for a couple of months and things were not the same, thank goodness she moved back.

My best friend and I met in high school when she stole my boyfriend. As you can imagine we didn't like each other much at the time. Then out of the blue one day she called me up and invited me to hang out. After that we have been best friends ever since. We always laugh about the boy, since he ended up being just another dumb boy anyway.

She is the best friend ever. She is a very giving person, and is always willing to help me out. She is probably one of the very few people who has seen me act all wild, crazy and weird and not rolled her eyes at me, because she acts the same. Sometimes we have been asked if we're sisters or a few people have asked if we're twins but I don't see that one at all. I love my friend.

My best friend just seemed to understand me better than anyone else. She started out as my mother's friend, but after my mom moved away, we kind of inherited each other. wWe developed a sort of friend/mother/sister bond that I've never been able to dupilcate with anyone else.We shared similar hobbies and spent hours talking to each other and supporting each other through all the strange exciting and sometimes horrible things life threw at us. She passed away two and a half years ago. She was too young to go and I miss her everyday. I still think of her and want to tell her things. I like to imagine the great visit we will have someday when we finally get the chance to catch up.

My best friend is actually my sister. We are two years apart and have been best friends wince we were young. People would always tell us how sisters that close in age never got along, but we can obviously prove them wrong, since we have had maybe one argument in our entire lives. Probably when we were little. We have always had a special bond with each other. It's still that way today. We do everything together. We both have 2 kids and our kids are best friends as well. My parents weren't lying when they would always say "Your friends come and go, but your family will always be here for you." I believe that, especially with the wonderful relationship I share with my family, mainly my sister.:)

My best friends inspire me to be a better person. Plus they love me through my weirdness and we are truly kindred spirits.

I met one of my best friends through divine intervention (that really is the only way to describe it)! I am a very shy, introverted person and have a hard time making friends. I moved to a new place and knew absolutely no one and was beginning to feel pretty lost. I had a lady from my church call me up one day and say, "I know you don't know me and I don't know you but you are supposed to be my part time nanny." I immediately agreed and we became close friends the first time we really talked. I moved away and wasn't able to talk face to face with her for about 18 months but when we did it was amazing how well she still knew me and told me exactly what I needed to hear at that moment. I love her dearly and even though we may only email occasionally, I count her as one of my forever friends!

One of my best friends, Melissa, I met when her husband handled the adoption of my brother and I by our dad, when I was just 16. From the moment I walked into the law office, I felt a connection. It was as if I had known her for ever. I started babysitting for her when they had their first child, and would spend hours up at her house visiting with her. She has always been there no matter what. We still enjoy getting together and just catching up.
When I called and told her that my husband had suddenly died, there wasn't a hesitation. She just said, "When and where is the funeral." Her, her husband, and most of their nine children drove a few hundred miles to come support my girls and I. She is like a big sister to me, and is always glad to see or hear from me.

My best friend is my sister. We have so much in common and so many things that we do the same - even though we're ten years apart in age. Whether we have successes or news to share, or just need someone's shoulder to cry on, we're there for each other. I don't live very close to my sister, so we phone each other a lot! She's truly my best friend (next to my husband!)

My best friend listens to me. I have adopted a few children with serious issues and my friend listens when I takle about their problems. She doesn't judge or question the decisions I have made with the kids I have.

Hi, I just finished your latest book, "Shudder". Wow! I really enjoyed it. Good suspense and a lot of feelings. I have enjoyed all your books. I am 68 years old, retired and love to read, but I will not read authors who write using bad language or sexual content. I do so appreciate your books and give them to my grandchildren of which I have 23 and 3 greats. My best friend is my wonderful husband who listens to my reviews of the books I read. Thanks for being the kind of writer you are. Marilyn Hill
