OFF WITH THE OLD---ON WITH THE NEW, CONTEST THAT IS

Winner of the April-A contest is jendoll70! She gets two books, one from the kick-off for this contest and one from her wish list. jendoll, please send me your mailing address and a list of at least five books on your wish list and let me know which of the Whitney finalist books listed you would like. Contact me at bhansen22 at msn dot com .

Now for the new contest. Every time I do a book signing or speak to a group, I receive a lot of questions about myself, about writing, about my books, or about the LDS book market in general. I've decided to open my blog for the next couple of weeks, until April 30, to questions from readers. Any question asked, I'll try to answer. And each question or comment will give the submitter another chance to win a book from his/her wish list. So on with the questions beginning now. You get one chance if you're a follower and another chance(s) if you comment or ask a question.

It has a nasty taste.

Okay I have a question. When did you first decide you wanted to be a writer? How old were You?

Jolynn_Reads said...

I your opinion, what is the best book You wrote, or Your favorite.
Which of your books sold the most copies,( not the most money necessarily.)
Thanks for answering the questions, it's to get to know authors.

Heidi, my first short story was published in a farm magazine when I was seven years old. I decided then that I wanted to be a writer. Other careers interested me and I've done a lot of different things, but writing has been the one consistent drive throughout my life.

Jolynn, it's hard for me to say which book is my best. Macady has been a good seller for a long time and has gone through a lot of reprints. There's probably more of my personal faith and beliefs in The River Path and the Bracelet Series than in the others so they mean a great deal to me. Chance Encounter was one of the most fun books to write. I have emotional ties to all of them. As for which one sold the most copies, I'm not sure. It was probably either The Bracelet or Macady.

What do you like to do when you have time to do whatever? No writing, no "mommying", just time to be Jennie?

What is your favorite childhood memory?

Jennie said...

Mindy, in addition to reading I love to garden. I also really like to fish. Unfortunately eating is up there pretty high on my things I like to do list too.

Jennie said...

Glen and Robyn, I have so many favorite childhood memories I don't know where to begin picking a favorite. Horseback riding with my brothers or cousin, imaginary games with my best friend, Roger, hunting wild flowers with Mama, fishing with my Dad, swimming, picking asparagus, dollar night at the Drive-in, Mama reading to us around the kitchen range before going to bed, and so much more.

I enjoy your blog and have enjoyed some of your books. I really liked your daughter's analogy on fantasy and chicken...

So why don't you like fantasy?

Jennie said...

Vandee, I'm not sure there is a particular reason I don't enjoy fantasy; it just isn't my favorite genre. Actualy, I've read some I enjoyed such as I recently read the Sapphire Flute by Karen Hoover and was favorably impressed. It's partly that I prefer real people and real situations to totally abstract ones. I particularly don't like anything that edges toward the occult and a lot of fantasy does. I also prefer to see people/characters get out of their problems through their own strength, intelligence, and ingenuity rather than depend on magic, some kind of drug or potion, or mythical creature to rescue them.

Hi Jennie! this is Leah Stacey. i wrote you that buisness letter. how exactly do i enter the contests? i never have been on a blog or done anything like this. i do have a question though, have you ever played an instrament?

Jennie said...

Leah, anytime you comment on my blog, you are automatically entered in a drawing for one of the books I've reviewed. You can enter as many times as you like and if you sign up as a follower you are entered in each contest.
As for playing an instrument, yes I've tried, but I'm partially tone deaf so music doesn't come easy for me. I had four years of piano lessons and never got out of the first year book. I also played the flute in Junior High and High School band. I wasn't good and I had to have private lessons on the side, but it was a good experience and left me with some great memories and the ability to appreciate some music.

Thanks for replying amd for the info. :) That is cool that you at leased tried. I myself play the cello. I love it. I'm right now reading The Topaz. I feel I am inside your book. Two nights ago I finished reading The Ruby and couldn't help crying when Charlie Mae lost all she loved. I love your books.

I just finished reading The Ruby so here is my question. Any chance there will be another book in this series? I have loved this set of books you have written!

Jennie said...

Ordinary Mom, that is the question I'm asked over and over. No, there won't be more books in the series though it was originally intended to be six, not four volumes. When the new owners of Covenant took over, a deciscion was made to switch from hardback to paperback and to limit the series to four. I already had the fifth book (Diamond) half written. I finished it and if my publisher accepts it, it will come out as a stand alone with all references to the gem removed.

That is very disheartening that they limit a series! I would still love to read The Diamond, though ... I think you have many readers who would love to see this series through completion :) !!
